Shartlesville Browns vs. Asian Tsunamis

The Tsunamis made their way to Shartlesville for the middle series of their marathon Saturday line up.

Game 1: Gallardo v Nola. The Tsunamis opened the series scoring in the 3rd by pushing 2 across against Gallardo courtesy of a Davis lead off walk followed by a Kang double. Kang came around to score on a Bogaerts single. Batting 3rd in place of suspended Bruce Hairpin, Kyle Seager homered to lead off the 4th against his old club to cut the lead to 2-1. The Sharts manufactured a run in the 5th to tie the score and it stayed that way all the way to the bottom of the 12th when Billy Burns delivered a 2-out, 2-run double to make it 4-2. Caesar Ramos worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to get the save and make a winner of Hunter Strickland.

Game 2 saw more of Seager trying to prove the Asians should never have let him go. He smacked a 2-run homer in the 1st off Jordan Zimmermann, who was the fruit of that trade for the Tsunamis. That staked Kershaw to a 2-0 lead. The Tsunamis scratched a run back on back-to-back doubles from Cabrera and Bautista in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Browns took over in the 4th. Perez doubled with two outs followed by a Herrera walk and a Segura RBI single setting the stage for Jarrod Dyson. He reached the seats for a 3-run homer and a 6-1 Browns lead. Kershaw got by a Grandal solo homer in the 8th to notch his 3rd CG of the year and improve to 3-3.

Game 3 and once again the Tsunamis scored first as Joey Bats drove Grichuk in after he doubled in the 3rd off Strasburg. They added another run in the 3rd to lead 2-0 before the Sharts bats got busy in the 4th off Cueto. It started again with a Seager leadoff HR followed quickly by a Morales dinger. A Phillips single and Caleb Joseph double chased Cueto after just 3 innings pitched and with no outs in the 4th. The Browns pushed 2 more runs across in the inning to lead 4-2. Two more solo homers from Morales in the 5th and 8th allowed the Browns to withstand single runs from the Tsnumais in the 6th and 7th off Strasburg, who still ended up with the win. Strasburg hit Kang in the 3rd, 5th and 7th but none of them were intentional. Tony Watson closed things out for his 2nd save.

Game 4 was a classic getaway day affair, played at a very brisk pace. It was scoreless after 5 full innings before the Asians got all the runs they would need on a Gutierrez 2-run job off Wacha. Adam Warren allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th, but the Tsunamis pen locked things down and only allowed a hit in 3.2 IP of relief to make Warren a winner. Rondon got the last 4 outs to earn the save and pull the Tsunamis back to .500 (12-12) before they headed off to face the Eliminators. The Browns fell to 10-14.

Notes: The Browns hit .219 for the series but plated 10 runs on 7 homers. Seager hit .313 out of the #3 hole usually held by Harper and pushed his season stats to .281-8-12 in 23 games. Next up for the Browns is the Lemonheads on Thursday.

Shartlesville Browns vs. Unhinged Wahoos

Saturday the Wahoos made their way to S’ville for a series between the league’s newest teams.

Game 1 pitted Gallardo against Bauer. The Wahoos jumped Gallardo early with a 2-run job in the first from Arenado. The Browns got one back with a solo shot leading off the 2nd by Kyle Seager. It stayed 2-1 Wahoos until the Browns batted around in the 5th plating 3 runs, but leaving the bases loaded when Dyson grounded out to end the inning. Abreu homered in the bottom of the 5th off Gallardo to make it 4-3 before the bull pens took over in the 7th, 8th and 9th for both clubs. The Browns improved to 6-11 while the Wahoos fell to 1-4.

Game 2 featured Kershaw and Cole but the expected pitchers’ duel didn’t really eventuate. Arenado tagged Kershaw for another 1st inning 2-run homer followed by doubles from Dozier and Martin in the 2nd and the Wahoos staked Cole to an early 3-0 lead. The Browns took the lead in the 4th by loading the bases for Salvy Perez who smacked a 2-out grand slam to go ahead 4-3. From that point on both pitchers settled in and only allowed 3 hits each on the way to complete games. The Sharts 4-3 victory was their 3rd in a row marking their first winning streak.

Game 3 was the Corey Kluber show. The Browns wasted back-to-back-to-back singles in the 3rd and never bothered Kluber again en route to a 4-0 loss. Kluber posted a complete game, 8-hit shutout and struck out 14 Browns along the way. The Tribe got all the scoring they needed in the 4th, kicked off once again by an Arenado dinger. The inning continued with a Will Myers walk and Blanco getting on by a Hairpin error before being plated on a sac fly by Crawford to push the lead to 2-0. Dozier got the Wahoos to the magic number of 4 runs with a 2-run HR to wrap up the 4th, and the game.

Game 4 saw the Wahoos momentum continue right out of the gate as the first 3 batters walked to load the bases for that man again. Once again Arenado was responsible for the first run of the game, but this time it was via a 4-6-3 double play vs. Strasburg. That would prove to be the only run the Tribe needed as A.J. Burnett took control. Yeah, you read that right. A.J. Burnett. The crafty vet went the distance allowing only 3 hits and managing to pitch around 5 walks to take the win. The Wahoos smacked the ball around using two doubles and two triples to pad their lead and end up winning 4-0 to go to 3-5. The Browns dropped to 7-13.

Bryce Harper sat out game 4 after taking the golden sombrero in game 3 and will reportedly be suspended by the club for the series against the Tsunamis next Saturday. Manager Anthony Champa took this drastic measure after Harper behaved like a little bitch in the locker room upon finding out he was getting the day off vs. Burnett.  Following the suspension he will be eligible to play all the Browns remaining games, however.

Lymebees vs. Shartlesville Browns

Game 1; Arrieta vs Kershaw; Bees get off to a quick start with 1 out in the first. Travis walks, Hosmer triples in the first run, Braun singles to score Hosmer and Franco follows with a 2-run HR for a 4-run 1st inning. Browns score in the 3rd on a one-out single by Castro followed by a Dyson triple. Bees chase Kershaw in the 7th. After the first two batters strike out, Beltre singles, Pederson doubles and Gonzalez chases in two on a Castro throwing error. Browns get an unearned run in the 7th. Bees get a single run in the 8th as Bees win 7-2.

Game 2; Gray vs Gallardo; Bees get 2 runs in the 2nd, single runs in the 5th and 6th, and 2 runs in the 9th as Gray pitches a complete game 3-hitter. Bees win 6-0.

Game 3; Strasburg vs McCullers; Browns get a solo HR by Perez in the 2nd. Bees come back in the 2nd with a leadoff HR (gift) by Upton and score another run in the inning. Beltre hits a solo HR in the 4th. Bees finish scoring with 4 runs in the 6th. Bees win 7-1.

Game 4; Shields vs Syndergaard; Bees score twice in the 1st. Browns get a leadoff single by Herrera in the 3rd followed by a run-scoring double by Castro, but Syndergaard would get out of the inning and pitch a complete game giving up 4 hits. Bees would score in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th innings as Bees complete the 4-game sweep with a 10-1 win.

Lymebees record at 8-4.

Shartlesville Browns vs. Shooting Stars II

Game 1) Browns finally get in the W column behind Kershaw who went 7 and allowed 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5. Game 1 marked one of the trends of the series: big 1st innings by the victors as the Sharts sent 8 to bat scoring 3 runs on 5 hits including homers by Bruce Hairpin and Kyle Seager. Another trend emerged for the Browns in the 5th as they plated 2 runs with only one hit as Morales walked ahead of a Castellanos 2-run bomb. The Browns cruised to an 8-3 victory.
Game 2) Game 2 pitted deGrom against Gallardo and turned on another 2-run/1-hit inning for the Sharts as deGrom walked Seager leading off the 2nd and surrendered a 2 run shot to Salvy Perez. It stayed locked at 2-0 until the 8th when the Stars got a 2-out rally going. Inciarte singled, took 2nd on an error and was plated by a Carpenter base knock to cut the lead to 2-1. Tony Watson got the last out of the 8th and stayed on to pitch the 9th for his first save after the Browns plated an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th to improve to 2-4 with a 3-1 win.
Game 3) The big first inning was back as the Stars knocked Wacha around. Inciarte doubled to lead things off followed by an Escobar walk to set the stage for Carpenter who reached the seats for a 3-run HR. The Stars weren’t done as Casali singled and reached second on a Billy Burns throwing error. He was plated by Choo to push the Stars advantage to 4-0 before the Sharts ever touched a bat. The Browns looked to chip away when Morales actually hit with RISP and doubled in Zobrist in the 2nd, but that was all they had against Kuechel. He waltzed through the Browns lineup allowing 1 run on 2 hits while walking 2 and K’ing 10 (including 6 in a row in the 6th and 7th) to get the W. Soria and Smith were perfect in the 8th and 9th to close it out. Carpenter also added a solo shot in the 3rd inning to help the Stars to a 5-1 win.
Game 4) This game featured both of the big themes of this series. In the top of the 1st the Browns got a leadoff triple from Dyson and an RBI ground out from Phillips followed by back-to-back doubles from Hairpin and Morales to stake Strasburg to a 3-0 lead before he took the mound and it would prove to be all he needed. Phillips and Seager solo jobs in the 5th and 6th made it 5-0 before Inciarte doubled to lead off the 6th and was driven in by Teixeira to cut the lead to 5-1. Then came the familiar scenario in the 8th as Hairpin walked and Seager smacked a two-run shot for another 2-run/1-hit inning, the third for the Sharts in the series. Seager ended up 4/2/4/3 with 2 HRs and a 2b. Strasburg gave up an unearned run in the 9th but held on for the CG win as the Browns improved to 3-5 behind the 7-2 victory.
Notes: The Browns hit .246 for the series and had their slugging shoes on to the tune of 5 doubles, a triple and 8 homers.

Arrogant Bastards vs. Shartlesville Browns

For the 2nd series of the season the AB’s went limping into downtown Harrisburg, AKA Shartlesville, for their next set against the Browns.  The Browns were kicking off their inaugural OOTL season.

Game 1
The tone for this series was set early as Kershaw squared off against Hamels and neither starter was willing to give an inch.  The Browns would threaten in the 4th and 5th, but Hamels hunkered down to get out of back-to-back multiple-hit innings while the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 8th.  Russell Martin hit a PH double to knock in Gerardo Parra to make the score 1-0.  Hamels pitched a clean 9th for a CG 5 hit shutout while fanning 11 w/ only 1 walk.  Kershaw fanned 10 but took the tough luck loss.  The two teams combined for 8 hits.
Game 2
Gallardo squared off against Scherzer in this game.  Trout led off the bottom of the 1st w/ a solo HR (trending….) for a 1-0 AB’s lead.  Scherzer had a one-hitter through 8 innings as the score remained 1-0.  The AB’s plated an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on a SAC fly by Longoria which plated Andrus.  Scherzer gave up a leadoff single in the top of the 9th to Odubel Herrera and a call to the pen was made for Wade Davis.  Davis struck out the first two Browns he faced, but w/ two outs Billy Burns jacked a 2-run HR to tie the game at 2-2.  In the bottom of the 10th Mike Trout ended what he started w/ a walk off solo HR (still trending…) and a 3-2 AB’s win.  Thornton got the win while Hunter Strickland took the loss.  The two teams combined for 10 hits.
Game 3
Miller and Big Game James Shields matched up for game 3 as the scene shifted to Shartlesville.  Giancarlo Stanton would open the scoring in the top of the 1st, knocking in Piscotty w/ an RBI single.  But the Browns said, ‘we go early this game’ and immediately bounced back w/ a 2 spot in the bottom half of the 1st.  Singles by Phillips and Burns were followed up w/ a 2 run double by Bruce Hairpin….um, wait….Bryce Harper.  In the 2nd Shelby Miller lost control and walked Harper with the bases loaded to force in Salvy Perez for a 3-1 lead for the Browns.  The game remained 3-1 until the 8th when Stephen Piscotty doubled home Elvis Andrus to cut the Browns lead to one.  The Browns turned to their closer Brad Ziegler in the 9th but after a K to Stanton he walked Big Papi.  Pillar pinch ran and stole 2nd as Parra struck out.  W/ 2 outs Joe Panik delivered a double to plate Pillar and tie the game at 3-3.  In the top of the 11th Kevin Pillar dropped a perfect bunt single to lead off the inning.  He then stole 2nd, was bunted to 3rd by Parra, and then scored on a SAC fly by Panik for a 4-3 AB’s lead.  Mark ‘the Shark’ Melancon came on for the save in the bottom of the 11th as AB fans wondered if there was a closer controversy brewing.  Brach pitched 3 innings for the win while Gilmartin took the loss.
Game 4
Salazar and Wacha would deal for 6 shutout innings a piece as both teams continued to pound the baseball.  But Stanton led off the 7th with a solo HR (trend setting…); then the AB’s went BB, fly out, BB, single, single, and single to push their lead to 4-0.  Salazar pitched a clean 7th to get a bump up in grade just in time to give up a single in the 8th to Burns followed by a 2 run jack by Harper to trim the lead to 4-2.  Davis once again came on in the 9th and surrendered a leadoff double to Herrera followed by a one out single to Phillips putting runners on 1st and 3rd.  Burns then hit a SAC fly to plate Herrera to set the stage for Harper once again.  But this time Davis struck him out to end the game and complete the sweep.  Salazar got the win, Davis the save and Wacha took the loss.

Additional Game notes….
The AB’s went 6 for 24 w/ RISP for a .250 clip while the Browns went 2 for 17 for a .118 clip.
The AB’s hit 3 more solo HR’s as all 7 of their HR’s have now come w/ no one on base.
AB’s are now 5-3 on the young season w/ a .168 team batting average.

The AB’s will host the Eliminators next Wednesday then will be taking the following week off (at least that is the plan).
