2017 Third Period

Shartlesville Browns at Speakers

Game 1: Lester v Ross. Speakers get the lone run in the game on a Kinsler HR in the 2nd. Both pitchers go the distance. Speakers 1/4/1 Browns 0/4/0.

Game 2. Tanaka v Hellickson. Browns get 2 in the 1st on Seager solo shot and Reddick double. A Seager double in the 3rd made it 3-0 before a Cespedes solo homer in the bottom of the 3rd made it 3-1. The Sharts got an insurance run in the 6th when Ramirez doubled and was plated by an Abreu single. The Speakers kept coming though as Cespedis had a HR turned so a double in the 8th (he would be stranded) and the had 3 hits and a wild pitch in the 9th to make it 4-1. Brad Ziegler got a pinch hitting Kris Bryant to hit into a 4-6-3 to end the game. Browns 4/7/1 Speakers 2/10/0

Game 3: Cueto v Arrieta. This one was an old fashioned pitchers duel. And I mean like way old fashioned, like from the 60’s. Arrieta threw 11 shut out innings and Cueto had 10 1/3. The Speakers turned back 3 HR along the way and Ian Kinsler did it again for them in the 12th when he took Nate Jones deep for the game and series win. Speakers 1/6/0 Browns 0/7/0

The Browns fall to 31-35 and will play the Wahoos on Sunday.

If it weren’t for dingers they may still be playing.

Game 1: Tanaka v Kluber. Browns 4/6/0 Wahoos 3/8/1. Browns get all their runs on 3 homers from Brian Dozier
Game 2: Miranda v Porcello. Browns 2/4/0 Wahoos 1/5/0. Marte leads off the game with a homer. J. Rameriz ties it with a solo in the 7th and J. Abreu doubles in the winning run.
Game 3: Lester v Strasburg. Wahoos 2/6/0 Browns 0/6/1. Altuve hits a 2-run HR in the 6th. Browns have 1st & 3rd with no out in the 9th and Mann rolls a 64 to ax Seager at home on Rameriz fly out to center.

Browns wrap up the 2nd period vs the Lemonheads next weekend.

Speakers at Browns

The Speakers came downtown to face the Browns yesterday.

Game 1: Tanaka v Martinez. The Browns got out to an early lead when Peraza was hit by a pitch leading off the game and came around to score on an Abreu 2-out RBI single. The advantage was pushed to 3-0 in the second when Belt and Calhoun walked and were plated on RBI singles (once again with 2 outs) by Reddick and Dozier. Dozier added a solo homer in the bottom of the 8th and Cargo got one back in the top of the 9th with a dinger of his own off Donnie Hart. Tanaka got the win, Martinez took a CG loss. Browns 4/7/0 Speakers 1/4/0

Game 2: Cueto v Price. The Speakers got right to work in the 1st as Cespedis doubled followed by a Rizzo double and a Machado single to make it 2-0. It could have been worse for the Browns since Cargo was picked off first prior to Cespedis’ double and Machado’s rolled a homer which was turned back. The Brown got the 2 runs right back in the bottom of the 1st as Maybin led off with a double and Guyer got hit. Abreu drove in Maybin with a single and Guyer came all the way around to score on a Cespedis error. Then the bats went quiet as both teams combined for 3 hits over the next 4 1/2 innings. The Sharts got the next run with some small ball in the 6th. Ramirez worked a 1-out walk and moved to 3rd on Seager’s hit-and-run single. Belt brought Ramirez in with ground out to make it 3-2. Cueto improves to 4-5 while Price went the distance in the loss. Nate Jones got 5 outs for his 3rd save. Browns 3/5/1 Speakers 2/5/1

Game 3: Montgomery v Hellickson. The Speakers opened the scoring once again with a C. Young RBI single plating R. Davis in the 1st. Jose Ramirez got a gifted HR (vs a -12) in the 2nd and Reddick socked a solo shot in the 3rd to put the Sharts up 2-1. Cespedis doubled in the 4th and came around to score on a Seager error one batter later to tie things up at 2. The Browns pulled away with a Seager two-run double in the 5th and two more runs thanks to doubles from Dozier and Belt with a Ramirez triple sandwiched in between in the 7th. Montgomery (3-1) was the winner while Hellickson took the loss. Browns 6/12/1 Speakers 2/3/1

Notes:
Shartlesville slashed .261/.353/.435 in the series and batted .276 with 2 outs and .292 with RISP.

The Browns are now 17-13 in games started by right handers and 9-12 against southpaw starters.

A. Recker grounded out with the bases loaded in the 5th inning of game 3. The Browns are now 7-24 (.292/.333/.542) with the bases loaded including a HR, 2B and a 3B along with a walk, a HBP and 2 Sac Flies.

Eliminators at Shartlesville Browns

The Browns hosted the Eliminators this afternoon (6/10), and it’s become clear that the Browns may never win again.

Game 1: Lester v Samardzija. The Sharts loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 1st only to have Reddick K… and then get ejected. Yeah, it was going to be that kind of series. In the 2nd the Browns scored 3 on an RBI double from Sal Perez and a 2-run double from Kyle Seager. Then the bats went silent. Lester was cruising, retiring 18 of 19 at one point when, with 2 out in the 8th, Castillo hit a ball at Corey Seager who did what 8 shortstops do and booted it. That’s all the Eliminators needed. Herrera (-9 vs LHP) singled to chase Lester. Bogaerts greeted Nate Jones with a 2-run double and then Steve Pearce put the Elims ahead with a 2-run HR. The Browns went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th but at least tried to put up a fight against Reed in the 9th. Calhoun led off with a double followed by a Maybin walk. Salvy K’d and Fowler grounded into a double play to end it. This game was the bright spot in the Series for the boys from Shartlesville. Eliminators 4/5/0 Browns 3/5/1

Game 2: Sale v Cueto. The less said about the next two games, the better. Eliminators get the first run of the game in the 7th. Sharts tie it in the bottom of the 8th with a solo shot from Salvy. It stayed 1-1 till the 13th when former Browns Herrera and Segura both single. Herrera scores the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Ian Desmond delivers Segura on a single of his own. Eliminators 3/9/0 – Browns 1/4/0

Game 3: Rodon v Gausman. The Browns take the lead in the 2nd on a Maybin sac fly. The Elims tie it in the 6th when former Brown Hanley Ramirez doubles with 2 outs and Steve Pearce singled him in. The Browns never threatened to score but the pen looked like they would keep them in the game. Cody Allen K’d 7 in his 3 innings of relief and with a runner on 2nd in the top of the 9th Donnie Hart K’d Desmond to end the inning. Mike Montgomery was summoned to start the 10th, for what looked to be another long affair. He had other ideas as he walked the bases loaded, surrendered a run on a sac fly, walked the bases loaded again before giving up a bases clearing double to Steve-Motherfucking-Pearce. Just for shits he walked the next batter too, before getting the last out. Five walks. Five. Five. Eliminators 5/5/0 – Browns 1/7/0

Shartlesville Browns at Arrogant Bastards

The Browns opened the second period last night against the Bastards.

Game 1: Rodon v Scherzer. The AB’s set the tone right away as Stanton leadoff the game with a homer. They pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the top of the 5th when Piscotty delivered Trout on an RBI single. In the bottom of the 5th Jose Abreu broke up Scherzer’s perfect game with a solo shot to make it 2-1. The Sharts scratched across an unearned run to tie it in the 6th to tie it. An Ozuna triple followed by a Gattis Double in the 8th off Nate Jones sunk the Browns and the AB’s touched up Cody Allen in the 9th for 3 insurance runs. Bastards 6/12/1 – Browns 2/5/0

Game 2: Paxton v Hamels. This time the Bastards waited till the second batter of the game to circle the bases. Trout singled and then came all the way around to score on Sean Rodriguez’s 3 base error. The AB’s added 2 in the 2nd on Forsythe & Stanton RBI singles, and made it 4-0 in the top of the 3rd as Piscotty reached the seats. In the bottom of the 3rd S. Rodriguez got the Browns first hit with a 2 out single. That was followed by a Fowler double and a Reyes walk to load the bases for Jose Abreu who connected for the Browns first Grand Slam of the year. But Paxton immediately gave the lead back surrendering a leadoff HR to Saladino in the 4th. The Bastards would add two more in that frame and get another Stanton HR in the 5th to push the advantage to 8-4. The Sharts got one back in the 7th on a Calhoun 2-out RBI double, but the AB’s pen shut it down from there. Bastards 8/15/0 – Browns 5/6/1

Game 3: Hill v Maeda. The Bastards scored first again when Healy singled leading off the 2nd, Ozuna doubled and Andrus plated one with a Sac Fly to center. The Browns earned their first lead of the Series (and first in the last 7 games overall) When Brandon Belt smacked a 2-run HR in the 3rd. Then the Browns went on a double-number bonanza in the 4th; sending 13 men to the plate while scoring 8 runs. The inning included 6 straight hits, 3 doubles and a Dozier HR. After that Hill was in cruise control retiring 18 straight on the way to a complete game win. Browns 10/12/0 – Bastards 1/3/2

Notes: The Browns Slashed .212/.291/.384 but were really done in by a lack of base runners.

With RISP the Sharts were .421/.476/.944 and were also a respectable .257/.350/.514 with 2 outs. Just not enough table setting.

The Bastards two wins could’ve been bigger except for 3 runners being cut down at the plate by the Sharts’ OF (Rodriguez, Fowler, Reddick).

Abreu (11/3/4/5 2 HR, 2B 2 BB) C. Seager (4-11 2 BB) and Belt (9/3/4/3 HR, 2B, 2 BB) were the only consistent Browns hitters. The pitching standout was obviously Hill.

Dexter Fowler continues to be ice cold, going 1-12 in the series and dropping his average from .290 to .266. He was hitting .321 through the first 8 series of the year.

The Browns may play the Eliminators on Saturday.

The key to good dice, like good peanut butter, is consistency.
