Asian Tsunamis at Shartlesville Browns

The Tsunamis traveled to Shartlesville for an early morning series on Saturday. Here’s what went down:

Game 1) Gallardo v Nola. The Tsunamis struck first when Cabrera singled with the bases loaded to drive in 2 in the 3rd. The Browns evened the score in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo HR from former Asian Danny Espinosa and an RBI single from Iglesias. Espinosa put the Sharts ahead with an RBI single in the 4th before the Tsunamis tied it up again in the 7th. They would go ahead with a ridiculous series of events in the top of the 8th. Kang and Cabrera reached on errors to lead off the inning and Grichuk drove in one with a ground out. The Browns won it 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th when Hairpin worked a 2-out walk and was driven in by a Perez double.

Game 2) Wacha v Gonzalez. The Tsunamis got the leadoff hitter on in 7 of the first 8 innings but didn’t score in any of them. Meanwhile, the Browns got a run in the 5th when Iglesias singled in Joseph and unearned solo runs in the 6th and 7th to lead 3-0 going into the top of the 9th. Wacha allowed yet another leadoff runner as Cabrera singled. Grichuck smacked a 2-out homer to make it 3-2 with no one out. Wacha struck out Davis and got Hundley to ground out before Tony Watson was summoned to face Gordon. Former Brown Ryan Zimmerman pinch hit and popped up to 2B to end the Game. Wacha improved to 3-7 while Watson earned his 5th save.

Game 3) Cueto v Zimmermann. The Asians jumped on their former mate Cueto quickly, and often. Bogaerts led off the game with a double and was plated by a Kang single. Kang came around to make it 2-0 on a Cabrera double. Another Espinosa HR in the 3rd made it 2-1, but Hundley homered in the 4th to make it 3-1. The Browns pushed ahead again in the bottom of the 4th as Harper singled, Morales doubled and Dozier homered to make it 4-3. The Tsunamis tied it up on an RBI groundout by Grichuck in the 5th and looked to have broken things open in the 7th with doubles from Kang, Dickerson and Grichuck around a Cabrera walk to take a 7-4 advantage. With one out in the Browns’ 8th, Perez reached on an E6, Harper singled and Seager walked to bring Morales to the plate. He hadn’t homered in 27 starts but dropped a 66 to deliver a grand slam. Uehara struck out the side in the 9th to secure a 8-7 win and the Browns first ever sweep.

Notes:

The Browns were out-hit 32 to 26 in the series but turned 5 double plays and had 2 outfield assists to avoid more damage.

The Brown came into the series hitting .203 on the season but hit .252 for the series.

The Brown improve to 29-31 while the Tsunamis fall to 19-23.

Former Tsunami Danny Espinosa went 4-12 with 2 homers and 3 RBI.

Speakers at Eliminators

Game 1 – Former Speaker, Yasiel Puig, opens the scoring with a 2-out RBI single in the 1st. That immediately followed a top half where Kris Bryant walks with 2 away. Yoenis Cespedes gets robbed of a 2-run HR (Edinson Volquez +25) and Bryant is nailed at the plate to end the inning.

Victor Martinez’s double play grounder with the bases loaded in the 3rd makes it 2-0 Eliminators. AJ Pollock mows down Carlos Gonzalez at the plate in the 4th, but Andrelton Simmons’ 2-run HR caps that 3-run inning for the Speakers.

The Eliminators tie on 3 consecutive singles to open the 6th. Puig with his second RBI hit.

Ian Kinsler leads off the Eliminators’ 9th with a double off Jeurys Familia. After Joe Mauer walks, Jonathon Lucroy walks off with a double in the gap, 4-3.

W – Bryan Shaw; L – Familia (0-4)

Game 2 – The rout is seemingly on. Andrew McCutchen (2-run HR in the 3rd) and Carlos Correa (3-run shot in the 4th) back Jon Lester, who doesn’t allow a base runner until the 6th. That’s when the Speakers bat around plus two. 7 hits and a walk produce 6 runs for an improbable 6-5 lead. Bryant (3) and Chris Young (3) each go deep.

While the Speakers pen stymies the Eliminators, the offense adds another 6-run inning in the 8th. 5 hits (4 doubles), a walk and a costly Correa error complete the 12-5 come-from-behind win.

Interestingly, the Speakers only hit safely in those 2 big innings and do not get a base runner in the other 7! The Speakers have only scored in 3 of the first 18 innings, yet are 1-1 in the series.

W – Chris Archer (4-2); L – Lester

Game 3 – Roughned Odor (5) and McCutchen match solo shots in the 3rd. Freddie Freeman singles home another in the 4th for a 2-1 Eliminators lead.

Bryant strokes a clutch 2-out 3-run homer (4) in the 5th to put the Speakers on top, 4-2. The Eliminators get 2 singles and a walk the rest of the way against the Speakers’ relief corps while Bryant adds to the lead with another 2-run shot (5) in the 9th. 6-2 final and series win for the Speakers as Bryant slugs more HRs in this series than he has to date.

W – Roberto Osuna (2-0); L – Yordano Ventura; S – Familia (7, in his final appearance with the Speakers)

Eliminators at Lymebees

Game 1; Hernandez vs McCullers; Pollock leads off the game with a double, but is stranded there. Pollock leads off the 6th with a solo HR. Eliminators get a leadoff runner (McCuthcen); Heyward walks, Donaldson strikes out, Ethier singles in a run and Kinsler walks. Mauer hits for Freeman and hits into an inning-ending double play. Bees stay off the board until the 9th when Cano leads off with a double. Beltre makes an out, Reddick hits a game-tying 2-run HR off Hernandez, Tulowitzki strikes out, Avila walks and Hernandez’s day is done. Gonzalez runs for Avila. Wilson comes in to pitch to Yelich, who is pinch hit for with Braun who singles. Hosmer hits a game-winning double for a 3-2 come-from-behind Bees win.
Game 2; Smyly vs Bumgarner; Reddick leads off the Bees 3rd with a double, Gonzalez HBP and Norris follows with a 3-run HR. Eliminators in the 4th get a leadoff walk to McCuthen, Donaldson single, Martinez pop out, Puig doubles in 1 run, Kinsler walks to load the bases and Mauer and Castillo strike out to end the inning. Bees get 1 run in the 5th, and that would end the scoring with Giles coming in to finish the last inning and a third as Bees win 4-1.
Game 3; Sale ve Hendricks; Braun would lead off the Bees 2nd with a solo HR. Eliminators tie the score in the top of the 4th. Bees take the lead back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th and one more run in 5th. Bees bring in Capps to pitch the 9th. Ethier singles and Harrison pinch runs. Kinsler and Freeman make outs, Correa hits a 2-run HR to put the Eliminators within one. Jones hits for Castillo and walks, but Pollock would strike out to end the game as Bees win 4-3.
