Juggernauts vs. Shartlesville Browns

The Browns hosted the Juggernauts tonight.

Game 1: Rodon v Carrasco. The Juggs opened the scoring in the 5th as Ramirez led off with a single, Votto walked and Schoop singled to load the bases. With two outs back-to-back singles from Orlando and Springer made it 3-0. In the bottom of the 6th Kyle Seager singled and came around to score on Dozier’s triple. Dozier cut the lead to 3-2 coming into score on a passed ball. Rodon took the loss and Carrasco earned the win while Harris earned a 2 inning save. Juggernauts 3/6/1 Brown 2/4/0

Game 2: Cueto v Sabathia. The Juggs got on the board first once again when Freddy Galvis led off the 3rd with a dinger. Ramirez then doubled and made it 2-0 on Rivera’s RBI single. That would be all the support Sabathia needed as he twirled a complete game 2-hit shutout. The Browns didn’t get their first hit until the 6th and that was followed by a GIDP. Sabathia faced 28 batters in the win. Juggernauts 5/11/0 Browns 0/2/3

Game 3: Tillman v Kershaw. The Browns got their first (and what would turn out to be only) lead of the series when Reyes smacked a solo homer in the 2nd. The Juggs got that run back in the 3rd on a 2-out solo homer from Ramirez. Rivera made it 3-1 with a 2-run shot in the 5th and then a Krush Davis RBI single in the 6th pushed the lead to 4-1. Belt homered in the 8th vs Kershaw. Juggernauts 4/8/1 Browns 2/6/0

Game 3: Lester v Happ. The Juggs pushed across 2 unearned runs vs Lester in the 2nd on a Herrmann sac fly and a Votto RBI single after a Reyes error at short. In the top of the 6th the Browns got two out walks from Dozier and Reyes and tied things up with a double off the bat of Brandon Belt. But the Juggs came right back in the bottom of the 6th; loading the bases with walks to Springer and Ramirez with a K. Davis single in between. Herrmann walked with the sacks full to break the tie and Votto hit a sac fly to right to get the all important insurance run. The Browns threatened in the 8th as C. Seager pinch hit for Reyes and singled. Belt then followed with a single but Fowler struck out in his pinch hitting appearance and K. Seager grounded out. Juggernauts 4/4/1 Browns 2/7/2

Notes:

The Browns slashed .158/.211/.267, results more like the ’16 Browns than this year’s model.

Through the first 32 games the Browns averaged 5.06 runs per game and 8.75 hits per game. In this series those averages were 1.5 and 4.75.

Facing 3 lefty starters, including a 13 and a 17, Jose Reyes (+18 vs LHP) was 1-9 with the only hit being a 66 HR.

B. Belt was the only hitting star for the Browns going 4-12 with a 2B, HR, 2 BB and collecting 3 of the team’s total 5 RBIs in the series.

The most batters the Browns sent to the plate in 1 inning was 7 in the 6th inning of Game 4. Conversely they had only 3 batters in an inning 22 times out of 36 innings. 61% of the time. Yuck.

This concludes the first period for the Browns who will now take May off for a few well earned vacations. Chances are pretty good I probably won’t want to play again for a few weeks in June either after the bad taste this series left in my mouth.

Shartlesville Browns vs. The Plague

Today the Browns took on The Plague

Game 1: Rodon v Estrada. Runs were at a premium in this one. New Brown Josh Reddick led off the 3rd with a single, moved to 3rd on ground outs from Perez and Fowler and came in to score on a wild pitch. It was still 1-0 in the top of the 9th when Maybin and C. Seager singled followed by a Jose Abreu triple to plate two insurance runs. Another new Brown, Cody Allen, worked the 9th for the save. Rodon improved to 4-1 on the season. Browns 3/6/0 Plague 0/7/0

Game 2: Cueto v Roark. Fowler tripled to lead off the game and C. Seager made it 2-0 with a dinger. The Plauge didn’t wait long to strike back as 4 of the first 5 batters reached against Cueto to put them up 3-2. They piled on 3 more runs in the 2nd as Wieters led off with a walk followed by a Hamilton single and a Santana touched ’em all. The Sharts got single runs in the 3rd, 6th and 9th but squandered many chances in a 6-5 loss. Plague 6/9/0 Browns 5/11/1

Game 3: Tillman v Sanchez. The Browns loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st but couldn’t score. With 2 outs in the top of the 2nd the Plague got 3 straight singles followed by a Salvy Perez error. By the time the inning was over the Plague scored 4 runs (3 unearned). The Browns threatened against Sanchez but hit into 3 double plays to kill each chance. Cameron Maybin finally delivered two runs with a bases loaded single in the 8th, but that was all the scoring the Browns could muster. Tillman was a hard luck loser and the Browns lost back-to-back games for only the second time all season. Plague 4/7/1 Browns 2/6/1

Game 4: Lester v Fernandez. The Browns took an early 2-0 lead on a Dozier RBI single followed by a K. Seager triple. New Brown Jon Lester was cruising and looked like a sure winner when the Browns got an error-aided big inning of their own in the 5th. Tulo reached on an E3, Fowler doubled and Maybin drove them both in with a single. After a Dozier 2-out single K. Seager made it 6-0 with a single. Lester was still chugging along until the 7th when The Plague got 2 singles and 2 doubles to cut the lead to 6-3. For some unknown reason the Browns let Lester answer the bell in the 8th and with 2 outs he surrendered a solo shot to Goldy to make it 6-4. Dozier homered leading off the bottom of the 8th to push the lead back to 3 and Pedro Strop worked the 9th to earn the save. Browns 7/8/0 Plague 4/7/2

Notes:

The Browns slashed .244/.314/.417 while pitching to a 2.83 ERA. The pen was scoreless in 6 2/3 innings.

Dexter Fowler reached leading off all 4 games via 3 walks and a triple. He was 3-11 with 8 walks in the series.

K. Seager started the series 0 for his first 9 before getting a triple, double and single in game 4. With a shot at the Cycle he struck out in the 8th.

The Browns had 4 triples in the series and now have 12 on the season which is 2 more than they had all of 2016.

After making trades to improve defense the Browns had a season low 2 errors in the series.
