Shartlesville Browns at Shooting Stars II

The Browns traveled to Lewisberry to take on the Stars on Wednesday night.

Game 1: Wacha v Lynn. The Stars got right to work in the bottom of the 1st with a 2-out walk to Tex followed by Carpenter getting plunked to set the stage for a Granderson 3 bagger to take a 2-0 lead. The Browns struck back in similar fashion when Fowler worked a 2-out walk and Iglesias dropped an 11 to get into the second column and a 66 to tie things up. With the game tied, Aroldis Chapman came in with no outs and one on in the 4th and took control. He worked 3.66 hitless innings while striking out 6. The Stars hit the front for good and made a winner out of Chapman in the 5th when Pedroia led off with a double and Pence homered. The Iglesias HR was the Browns’ only hit in the game. Stars win 4-2.

Game 2: Paxton v deGrom. Peralta hit a leadoff homer to break a scoreless tie in the 4th and Pedroia added another in the 7th to put the Stars up 2-0. It was 3-0 when Hairpin hit a meaningless/stat padding solo shot in the 9th and the Stars went on to win 3-1. At this point the Browns fell to an all time low 9 games under .500.

Game 3: Shields v Lackey. The Browns used 2 hits, 2 errors and a walk to plate 3 unearned runs in the 1st. The Stars cut the lead to 4-2 using a 1B, 3B, 1B combo, but that was the last of their scoring for the day. The game featured 6 errors, including 5 by outfielders and the rare play board was in full use. The Sharts ended up with an ugly 10-2 win.

Notes:
The Browns and Stars ended up splitting the season series 5-5.
By going 1-2 in the series, the Browns reached 46 losses ensuring their first season will not be a winning one.
The cold bats continued as the Browns were 1-hit in game 1 and slashed .168/.266/.295 for the series.
After getting smacked around by the Speakers, the Browns Pen bounced back allowing no earned runs in 5.66 IP.

Speakers at Shooting Stars II

Both teams wrap up the 2nd period Thursday in Lewisberry.

Game 1 – David Price outduels Dallas Keuchel, shutting out the Stars on 5 hits. Only one Star reaches 3rd base against Price, who goes the distance. On the offensive side, Buster Posey (2-4, D, HR #5, 3 RBI, R, BB) and Kris Bryant (3-5, 2 D, RBI, R) lead the Speakers to a 7-0 win.

W – Price (5-4); L – Keuchel

Game 2 – Mark Teixeira and Matt Carpenter slug back-to-back 2-out doubles in the 1st to put the Stars up early. The Speakers tie on Shin-Soo Choo’s boot in right field in the 2nd.

Chris Archer and Jose Quintana settle in until the 7th. The Speakers send 8 to the plate against 3 pitchers, scoring 4 times, including a Rajai Davis 2-run triple as well as RBI doubles by Yoenis Cespedes (as a pinch hitter) and Anthony Rizzo.

The Stars battle back with a pair of unearned runs after the stretch, thanks to Archer’s throwing error. However, the Speakers expand their lead in the 8th, plating 3 runs against AJ Ramos. Chris Young raps a 2-run double and Ian Kinsler singles him home.

That’s where the late scoring ends as the Speakers win 8-3. Both teams record 10 hits, but the Stars strand 10 base runners.

W – Archer (6-3); L – Quintana

Game 3 – Mike Fiers and three Stars relievers blank the Speakers on 3 hits. While the Speakers go 0-7 with runners in scoring position, the Stars dent the plate just enough to prevent a sweep.

Curtis Granderson singles home Matt Carpenter with 2 away in the 3rd. Granderson’s 8th inning 2-out single includes a Carlos Gonzalez error which scores Carpenter again for a 2-0 final.

W – Aroldis Chapman (3 scoreless IP); L – Carlos Martinez (7-3)

Shooting Stars II vs. Arrogant Bastards

Last Wednesday night the Stars invaded Linglestown to wrap up the 1st period for both teams.  This may be more brief than previous write ups.
Game 1
Salazar v Fiers.  HFP belts a 2-run HR two batters into the game for a SS 2-0 lead.  In the 3rd HFP butchers a Trout fly ball into a 4 base error.  Peralta hits a solo HR in the 5th to make it 3-1.  Agone leads off the 7th w/ a solo Jack which chases Fiers.  With 2 outs Martin hits another solo not turned back by Smith’s +52.  Game stays tied until the top of the 11th as Andrus gets a hit and goes to third on a 2 base error by Holt.  Andrus then scores the winning run on a wild pitch.  AB’s win 4-3 in 11.  Dyson wins it; Davis the save; Lowe w/ the loss.
Game 2
Hamels v Lynn.  AB’s jump to 3-0 lead in the 2nd on an Ortiz single, Swihart double, Parra 2-rbi single, Gardner single and Russell RBI single, but strand runners on 1st and 3rd w/ no one out.  In the bottom of the 6th the SS erupt for 6 runs.  Tex triples in 3 to tie it and then Carpenter homers to make it 5-3. Another run is added later. Swihart knocks in Andrus on a groundout in the 8th but Tex answers w/ a solo HR in the bottom half for a 7-4 SS win.  Lynn wins; Brach loses; Chafin gets save.
Game 3
deGrom v Karns.  This becomes a 15-3 laugher early as SS win.  Tex doubles in 2 in the 1st.  Parra doubles in Ginger Jesus to make it 2-1 in 2nd.  In the top of the 3rd living hell breaks loose.  W/ bases loaded and two outs, Karns is one out away from keeping the game 2-1.  SS then go BB, double to clear bases, BB, single, BB, single and single as they build a snowman, chase Karns and take a 10-2 lead.  In the bottom of the 3rd the AB’s get an RBI single from Papi and an RBi double from Swihart.  Dyson ends up coming in for the AB’s and goes 5.1 innings giving up 4 more runs before he ends as a 1.  Choo knocks in a run in the 7th to make it 14-3.  In the bottom half deGrom is lifted after the AB’s rally with a double by Panik, Trout reaches on an error and Agone BB’s.  Lowe comes on to get two huge outs on Turner and Ortiz to keep the 11 run lead.  Lowe escapes 2 more runners in the 8th, getting out of it again.  SS add a run in the 9th on a double by Choo to make it 15-3.  Chapman comes in for some work in the 9th for a 1-2-3 inning.  deGrom winner; Karns loser.
Game 4
Lackey v Scherzer.  Ginger Jesus hit a solo in 1st for a 1-0 lead.  Casali BB’s to start the 2nd; then on a Granderson 12, the AB’s roll a 56 F2 for Agone to turn a DP into a single.  Frazier later hits a triple for a 2-1 SS lead.  Same score in the 4th; with two outs Choo singles and Frazier rolls a 33-5 on a called hit-and-run, which becomes a single.  Escobar then flies out.  Game stays 2-1 until 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Ginger Jesus doubles (22-0) and Gardner comes in to PR.  Chapman comes on to face Papi but Ozuna PH’s and drops a 22-7 (his 1st hit of the season only facing LH pitchers…APBA ball high plusses…gorilla sounds) to score Gardner standing and tie the game at 2.  In the top of the 10th Parra greets Chapman w/ another 22-0 and 33-1 in the 2nd column for a HR that +42 Chapman failed to turn back.  AB’s win 3-2. Melancon winner; Chapman loser.
No notes right now…5th straight series split for AB’s ending 1st period at 20-16.  I’ll take it.

Shooting Stars II vs. Speakers

Game 1 – The Speakers finally open their season and score 3 early runs on RBI doubles against Lance Lynn. Manny Machado connects for the first Speakers’ homer of the season with Anthony Rizzo aboard in the 7th for a 5-0 lead.

The Stars finally break through with a sac fly in the 7th off Chris Archer. Then the bottom of the 8th features a walk, a Mookie Betts error, a wild pitch and 5 hits in 6 at-bats. When the dust settles, the Stars erase a 5-0 deficit and enjoy a 6-5 lead, which the pen preserves in the 9th.

W – Andrew Chafin; L – Jeurys Familia (0-1); S – Joe Smith

Game 2 – Buster Posey’s RBI double and CarGo’s solo match Todd Frazier’s 2-run homer for a 2-2 deadlock in the 2nd. Both David Price and Jake deGrom settle in to fire blanks until the 8th.

After Rizzo’s lead-off double, Aroldis Chapman takes over for the Stars. Machado flies to center, but Posey walks on a 65-35. Cespedes flies to left bringing rookie Kris Bryant to the plate with 2 outs. He strokes a 2-run double for a 4-2 Speakers’ lead.

After Price sets the Stars down in order in the 8th, Roberto Osuna has a shaky 9th. Familia comes on to strike out Sin-Shoo Choo with the tying runs on base to save the 4-2 final.

W – Price (1-0); L – deGrom; S – Familia (1)

Game 3 – Dallas Keuchel and Matt Harvey strand baserunners through 3. In the bottom of the 4th, Machado singles home Posey. In the 6th, Ender Inciarte, (who has both hits against Harvey), adds a solo HR to his boxscore to tie the game at 1-1.

Cespedes singles to start the bottom half. Choo bobbles the ball in right allowing Yoenis to reach 2nd. Chris Young follows one out later with a 2-run tater.

The Stars manage just one single in the final 3 innings as the Speakers win, 3-1. Harvey (7 IP) and Jeremy Jeffress hold the Stars to just 4 hits, 3 by Inciarte.

W – Harvey (1-0); L – Keuchel; S – Jeffress (1)

Game 4 – The Speakers collect candlesticks in the 3rd (Rizzo RBI single) and 5th (Andrelton Simmons RBI single). Other opportunities for both teams prove fruitless until the 8th.

With 1 out, Inciarte and Hunter Pence single. Cecil relieves Carlos Martinez and uncorks a wild pitch to score Inciarte. Matt Carpenter then rockets a single to score HFP. Again, we’re tied in the series: 2-2.

Both teams threaten in the 12th with a runner at 3rd and less than 2 outs, but cannot convert. In the 13th Simmons singles and Rizzo walks. Machado launches a 3-run walkoff HR for a 5-2 final.

W – Sipp (1-0); L – Mark Lowe
