Asian Tsunamis at Speakers

Game 1 – The Tsunamis start fast against David Price. Ryan Zimmerman doubles and Xander Bogaerts reaches on Yoenis Cespedes’ third error of the season. With 1st & 3rd and no outs, Price whiffs Ryan Raburn, prevents a Franklin Gutierrez walk before a harmless pop to short, and then Ks Miguel Cabrera to end an eventful top of the 1st.

Same situation in the bottom half: 1st & 3rd, no outs. Jordan Zimmermann strikes out Cespedes and gets Kris Bryant to pop to 2nd. Carlos Gonzalez finds Raburn (OF-1) in center on an error re-roll, which results in an RBI single and E8.

In the 5th, a pair of one-out singles chase Zimmermann. Bryant reaches on a Zimmerman error to load the bases. Gonzalez lofts a fly to Jose Bautista in right, which proves deep enough to score Buster Posey.

Following Zimmerman’s double to lead off the game, Price allows no base runner past 1st base. Bogaerts’ 9th inning single (55-7) with 1 out is the only other Tsunami hit. Price strikes out both Raburn and Gutierrez to preserve the complete game 2-hitter, 2-0.

W – Price (5-4, 3rd shutout); L – Zimmermann

Game 2 – The Tsunamis threaten in the 1st inning again. Chris Archer whiffs both Cabrera and Bautista. In back-to-back ABs, Bogaerts finds his prized 55-7. Jung Ho Kang appears to leave the yard, but Archer rolls 16 for a 2-out double. To add insult to injury, Javier Baez relays a strike to nail Bogaerts at the plate to end the inning.

Clayton Kershaw retires the first two Speakers, but then allows consecutive singles to Posey (55-7), Baez and Mookie Betts (12-Fielding 3). Chris Young makes Kershaw pay with a 3-run shot (4) and early 4-0 lead.

Aided by a Khris Davis error, 4 more singles and Posey’s 2-run double, the Speakers score 4 in the 2nd, too. Betts and Young strike for back-to-back 2-out doubles in the 4th for a commanding 9-0 lead.

Pitching a neat 4-hit shutout through 8, Archer finally falters in the 9th. With 2 on and 2 out, Prince Fielder strokes a 2-run double, his first hit as a Tsunami! Archer Ks Randall Grichuk to close out the 9-2 complete game. Young (3-4, D, HR, 5 RBI, R) leads the 15-hit attack.

W – Archer (6-3); L – Kershaw

Game 3 – Wei-Yin Chen and Matt Harvey keep the opposing offenses at bay. The Tsunamis load the sacks in the 2nd with 2 away, but Dee Gordon strikes out to end the threat.

With 2 outs in the 4th, Khris Davis krushes a solo home run to give the Tsunamis their first lead of the series. With 2 outs in the bottom half, Young matches that solo power with his 5th HR of the season.

Speakers threaten in the 5th, but Kike Hernandez flies to center with 2 on and 2 outs. Cespedes pinch hits for Kike in the 7th and lifts a high fly that looks like it could go out; however, Hector Rondon, just into the game, knocks it back to a double (+33).

We remain tied 1-1 until the 13th inning. After Kinsler files to left, Rajai Davis triples. Erik Goeddel comes on to face Cespedes, who rolls a 9 against a 19: pop up to 2nd base for the 2nd out. Anthony Rizzo goes deep, which Goeddel (+51) turns into a walk off RBI single.

W – Darren O’Day (1-1); L – Brad Ziegler

Tsunamis score in just two of 31 innings (3 total runs). Speakers out-hit the Tsunamis 29-15. Speakers finish 6-4 against the Asian Tsunamis during the regular season.

Speakers at Lemonheads

Game 1 – The Speakers open the scoring against Hisashi Iwakuma on the first two batters of the series. Anthony Rizzo doubles and Buster Posey singles him home.

After Chris Archer walks a pair to start the 2nd, he battles to get 2 outs without the runners advancing. Then Neil Walker powers an RBI single to tie.

With 2 outs and nobody on the 6th, JD Martinez and Brandon “I Could Use a” Belt single. Matt Duffy laces an RBI double, but Belt is gunned at the plate by Ian Kinsler’s perfect relay.

Kinsler chases Iwakuma following a leadoff single in the 7th. Will Smith Ks Rizzo, but then the wheels come off. RBI single, walk, and Kris Bryant’s RBI double chase Smith. Pinch-hitter Chris Young greets new Lemonhead Cody Allen with a 2-run single through the drawn in infield. The crushing 4-run inning puts the Speakers on top, 5-2.

Belt’s 8th inning sac fly gets us to the final score, 5-3. Jeremy Jeffress retires all 6 Lemonheads he faces for a 2-inning save.

Posey (4-5, 2 RBI) gets singles each of his first 4 ABs (8,7,9, 8) before striking out in the 8th. JD Martinez (2-3, D, 2 R, BB) leads the ‘Heads.

W – Archer (5-3); L – Iwakuma; S – Jeffress (2)

Game 2 – Posey’s RBI double gives Jesse Hahn a 1st inning lead, which he graciously returns when Lemonheads prospect, Joey Gallo strokes a clutch 2-out RBI single in the bottom half. The Lemonheads pile on in the 2nd. JT Realmuto’s RBI triple and David Peralta’s 2-run double give the Lemonheads an early 4-1 lead.

Francisco Liriano walks Posey with the bases loaded in the 5th. The Speakers score a pair to close the gap to 4-3.

After Hahn retires the first two hitters in the bottom half, Realmuto and Walker single, sending Hahn (4.2 IP, 11 H, 6 ER) to the showers. Brett Cecil comes on, which prompts Manager Bob to pinch hit Travis Shaw for Charlie Blackmon. Shaw connects for a 3-run homer to give the Lemonheads a commanding 7-3 lead!

Shaw turns from hero to goat in the 7th as he bobbles Mookie Betts’ grounder to 1st to lead off the inning. 5 unearned runs later, including Manny Machado’s 3-run shot (10), the Speakers take a slim 8-7 advantage.

After Cecil and Trevor Rosenthal keep the ‘Heads off the scoreboard in the bottom half, Betts strikes for a 1-out double. Pinch hitter Yoenis Cespedes triples him home and scores on a 2-out single, Posey’s 4th RBI.

The Lemonheads go 1-2-3 in the 8th. Chris Owings 9th inning triple leads to a Duffy sac fly, but the Lemonheads fall short, 10-8. Darren O’Day gets the save, but surrenders a run for the third consecutive outing.

Realmuto (4-4, 2 D, T, RBI, 2 R) collects 8 total bases as the Lemonheads out-hit the visitors, 14-10. From the cleanup spot, Posey (2-3, D, 4 RBI, BB) now has 6 RBIs in the series.

W – Rosenthal (1-0); L – Liriano; S – O’Day (2)

Game 3 – Rizzo homers in the 3rd (10), but Owings triples home Belt in the 4th to tie 1-1. Owings tries to stretch his second triple of the series into an inside-the-park-homerun, but Carlos Gonzalez wings the ball to Kinsler, who nails the former Speaker at the plate.

Machado hits #11 in the 7th to break the tie. After the stretch, Owings and Walker single back-to-back. Realmuto hits a sac fly to left to re-tie at 2-2. Blackmon quickly unties the score with a huge 2-run homer. Lemonheads lead, 4-2.

Joaquin Benoit relieves Cody Anderson (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 HR) and promptly walks Betts to start the 8th. Rizzo follows with his 11th HR to re-tie at 4-4. Two outs later, Bryant slams his 8th homer to put the Speakers back on top, 5-4.

JD Martinez singles to start the bottom half, but Roberto Osuna retires the next 6 Lemonheads to complete the sweep, 5-4.

Posey adds 2 more hits (8 for the series). Of the Speakers 7 hits, 3 go for singles while 4 leave the park . The Lemonheads total 9 hits, including 2 more triples, a homer, and 2 perfectly placed hit-and-run singles.

W – Carlos Martinez (7-2); L – Benoit; S – Osuna (1)

Lymebees at Speakers

Game 1; Syndergaard vs Severino; Speakers would open the scoring in the 2nd on a leadoff triple by Davis followed by a Machado 2-run HR. Bees would come back with a Tulowitzki leadoff HR in the 3rd and tie the game in the same inning on 3 singles. Speakers come back in the bottom of the 3rd with 3 runs scoring on the next 5 batters, but the next 3 made outs to end the inning. Bees get a 2-run HR by Tulowitzki in the 4th and Hosmer hits a solo HR in the 5th to tie things up. Simmons singles for Speakers to lead off the 6th and, with the hit-and-run on, Kinsler hits a triple and is thrown out at home. Bees tie things up again in the 8th as Beltre hits a leadoff HR. That’s the way things stayed until the top of the 11th as Tulowitzki leads off with a double and Norris follows with a game-winning double as Bees win 7-6.

Game 2; Gray vs Price; Gray would pitch a complete game 6-hit shutout as Beltre would hit a solo HR in 4th and Bees add 2 runs in 7th and 1 run in 9th to win 4-0.

Game 3; Bumgarner vs Harvey; Speakers would score a run on a Betts triple after a lead off single, but Betts get stranded at 3rd. Bees would tie the score in the 2nd as Reddick would hit a two out single. Tulowitzki gets on by error and Norris singles in a run. Speakers get runners on 2nd and 3rd and Posey sac flies a run in for the lead. Bees would start the 5th with Norris hitting a single and going to second on an outfield error. Polanco fielders choices him to 3rd and Hosmer gets the runner home when Baez at short makes his second error of the game to tie things up. Beltre would single for the Bees to lead off the 12th. Reddick hits into a fielders choice runner out at second and then steals second. Tulowitzki strikes out, but with 2 outs, Norris hits a double to give the Bees a 3-2 lead and that would be the final score.

The Plague at Speakers

Currently the top two teams, The Plague and Speakers have played two consecutive one-run games (both won by The Plague) following two blowouts (both won by the Speakers) during the 1st Period. Today’s action only solidifies how well these two squads match up.

Game 1 – Manager Ed’s team opens the proceedings with a 3-run 1st against David Price. Brett Lawrie’s 2-out 2-run double does the damage.

The Speakers answer with 3 straight singles (with a Scott Kazmir wild pitch in the middle) to get 2 back. That’s when both southpaws settle in.

Rajai Davis leads off the bottom of the 7th with a triple into the right field corner. Newcomer Ian Kinsler flies to Billy Hamilton in foul ground (65-35) as Davis races home for the 3-3 tie.

Both teams squander scoring opportunities, so rookie Francisco Lindor goes deep off Darren O’Day in the 11th for the game-winner, 4-3. Jonathon Papelbon sets down the Speakers in order to record the save.

W – Blaine Hardy; L – O’Day (0-1); S – Papelbon

Game 2 – The Plague score in the 1st again on Lorenzo Cain’s 2-out RBI single after Denard Span’s leadoff double. This time, the Speakers go 1-2-3 in the 1st; however, they bat around in the 2nd. 5 singles, a walk and Mike Mousatakas’ throwing error result in a 5-run inning.

The Plague storm back in the 4th, scoring 4 to tie. Doubles by Cain and Moustakas sandwich a Michael Brantley single and HBP. Span plates the tying run with a 2-out single.

True to form, the starters each go at least 7 IP, then hand the tie to their respective pens. Today, the Speakers pen doesn’t allow a baserunner from the 8th to the end.

The Plague’s Blaine Boyer surrenders Manny Machado’s leadoff double in the 13th. Chris Young bunts Machado to 3rd (rolling a 33-0!). Joe Smith comes in to face Rajai, who singles in the hole (51-9) to walk off 6-5, knotting the season series at 3-3.

W – Brett Cecil (2-1); L – Boyer

Game 3 – Yet again, The Plague scores on a 2-out RBI single in the 1st, this time by AJ Pierzynski. Kris Bryant answers with a solo shot (7), the Speakers only HR of the series, in the 4th.

Again, chances to score for both teams come up empty until Span strokes a solo homer in the 7th. The Speakers get the tying run to 2nd in the 8th, but The Plague’s tough pen holds to complete the dramatic 2-1 finish.

W – Felipe Rivero; L – Carlos Martinez (6-2); S – Papelbon

Speakers at Shartlesville Browns

Let’s face it: The Shartlesville Browns are not meant to be a winning team. Consistently throughout the season when they’ve clawed their way to within site of being .500 they’ve crapped the bed. The Sharts were 2 games under when the Speakers came to town today:

Game 1: Shields v Harvey. The Speakers struck first when Cespedes doubled and was driven in on a Bryant 3B. Bryant made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out in the top of the 3rd. The Browns tied it up in the bottom of the 3rd when Iglesias dropped a 66 to get into the second column followed by an 11 for his first homer of the year. The Speakers 5th inning proved decisive as they used 2 walks, 3 singles and a sac-fly to move ahead 5-2. Matt Harvey earned the win and Darren O’Day got a one out save, marking his 3rd save against the Browns in the last 7 games.

Game 2: Burnett v Archer. The Sharts did all their damage in the 2nd as new Brown Jose Abreu led off with a single followed by a K. Seager walk. With one out Morales drove in a run with a single before Danny Espinosa delivered a 2-run double to put the Browns up 3-0. The Browns would ground into more double plays (2) than hits (1) off Archer the rest of the way. The Sharts pitching staff made the lead stand up, allowing just one unearned run as Burnett got the win and Tony Watson got a 2 inning save. Archer was a tough luck, complete game loser.

Game 3: Hahn v Gallardo. After the Speakers went 3 up, 3 down in the 1st, they plated 2 in the second and batted around while scoring 4 in the 3rd. That chased Gallardo as Carlos Rodon was summoned from the pen to start the 4th. He settled things down, going 4 1/3 and allowing only a solo homer to Gonzalez. Two other relievers also kept the Speakers from inflicting more damage, but all that did was help to lower the pen’s ERA. Hahn baffled the Browns, going the distance for a 4 hit shutout; walking just one while striking out 7 along the way.

Notes:

The Browns wrap up the 2nd period at 30-33. The Speakers improved to 31-20.

For the series the Browns slashed .172/.226/.256. and had only 4 extra base hits.

The Speakers outhit the Browns 28-15.

New Browns Jose Abreu (3) and Adam Jones (2) accounted for a third of the Browns hits.

The Browns had only 3 multi-hit innings in the series: The 3rd in Game 1 and the 2nd in Games 2 and 3.

The Browns are now 4-3 vs the Speakers this year.

Fact: The way I roll I could have the ’27 Yankees card set and still hit .200.

Second Period stats will be out soon.
