2015 Second Period

Shooting Stars II at Birds of Pray

G-1 Stars take 5-1 lead on a Morneau solo & 3 RBIs from D. Navarro. Birds score 4 in the bottom of the 6th on a 2-run triple by Davis & RBIs from Markakis & Altuve for a 5-5 tie. Birds get a walk-off double in the 11th from J. Schafer for the 6-5 win.

G-2 Stars get 4th inning RBIs from Pence & Kemp for a 2-1 lead. 8th inning back-to-back doubles by Frazier & Pence increase their lead to 3-1. Birds get a 9th inning double from Molina with 1 out, but AJ Ramos comes in to get the final 2 outs & save the Stars 3-2 win.

G-3 C.Crisp leads off the 1st with a homer. Birds tie in the 3rd on an RBI double by Altuve. Stars get a 6th inning double by Frazier for a 2-1 lead. Birds tie in the 8th on a SF by Markakis driving in an unearned run. In the 9th, Stars use a 2-out walk and an RBI double from Navarro for a 3-2 win.

The teams combined for 3 homers in the series, with 2 gifts.
D. Navarro had 4 RBIs in the series for the Stars.
Bird played 35 one-run games in the first 70 (50%), going 16-19.
Birds C. Davis hit .230 – 4 homers & 12 RBIs in the 1st Period; and, .115 with 1 homer & 8 RBIs in the 2nd Period.

Game 1 – After Anthony Rizzo’s RBI single gives the Speakers a 1-0 1st inning advantage, the Lemonheads bat around plus-1 in the 3rd. The aftermath includes a Yan Gomes 2-run single and Daniel Murphy hit-and-run RBI single. The Speakers collect one meaningless single until the 8th when Jason Heyward and Buster Posey go back-to-back to make the final of 6-3 appear better.
W – Zack Greinke; L – Carlos Martinez (0-2); S – Fernando Abad

Game 2 – Somehow the Speakers send 9 to the plate in a 4-run 2nd, which begins with a Yasiel Puig solo (his 3rd). The offense then takes the remainder of the game off while the Bud Norris shirt creates its magic spell. Bud goes 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K in the 4-1 final.
W – Norris (3-4); L – Matt Shoemaker; S – Jeurys Familia (7)

Game 3 – You may ask, “How can a team score 8 runs in the 1st and lose?” With the Speakers, it’s easy. Still ahead 9-7 with 2 outs in the 9th, Yoervis Medina’s error leads to JD Martinez’s 2-run double. After Pablo Sandoval goes deep for an 11-9 Lemonheads lead in the 11th, Anthony Rendon smacks a 2-run triple in the bottom half. (Of course, with 1 out, Howie Kendrick whiffs to prolong the madness.) Finally, Ian Desmond homers to lead off the 12th and the Speakers do their usual disappearing act (1-2-3) in the bottom half for a 12-11 Lemonheads come-from-behind win.

Shooting Stars II at Speakers

Game 1 – Justin Morneau’s 4th inning solo shot scores the only run of the game. The Speakers collect another grand total of 3 hits, waste a great outing by Bud Norris and fall by shutout for the 10th time this season.
W – Dallas Keuchel; L – Norris (2-4)

Game 2 – Alex Wood walks 3 in the 1st. With 2 outs, 1 run in and the bases juiced, Matt Kemp strokes a 3-run triple. Michael Cuddyer 2-out 2-run double in the 2nd makes it 6-0 Stars. The Speakers specialize in solo homers when the game’s out of reach, so Jason Heyward (2) and Anthony Rendon (8) contribute to the 6-3 loss.
W – Jered Weaver; L – Wood (3-2); S – Mike Fiers

Game 3 – Buster Posey’s RBI single and Scott Van Slyke’s (6) 3-run blast in the 1st are rendered meaningless. Michael McKenry and Angel Pagan homer in a 4-run Stars 5th. In the bottom half, Rendon’s RBI double knots the game at 6-6 and becomes the final hit for either team. Both pens blank the opposition. Jhonny Peralta’s bobble at short on Albert Pujols’ grounder (he specializes in 6-3 or more effectively 6-4-3 ground balls) starts the bottom of the 9th. Yoenis Cespedes pinch runs at 2nd and Andrelton Simmons bunts him to 3rd. After a Heyward intentional pass, Buster Posey lifts a fly to deep left. Coco Crisp catches the ball, but can’t throw out Cespedes with the winning run.
W – Jeurys Familia (3-3); L – Buddy Carlyle

2015 Second Period

Eliminators at Birds of Pray

G-1 Eliminators score 1st with an RBI single from A. Jones in the 2nd. Birds get single runs in the 3rd, (a Lagares triple), & 4th, (back-to-back doubles from Votto & McCann) for 2-1 lead. Eliminators got an RBI single by V. Martinez in the 5th, then a solo homer by J. Bruce & a Reyes SF, driving in J. Harrison who tripled. POY candidate C. Sale (10-0) went 7 IP, 7 hits 7 Ks for the Eliminators 4-2 win.

G-2 Eliminators took a 3-2 lead on RBIs from Bruce (bases loaded walk), a solo by V.Martinez & Freeman’s SF. Birds regained the lead on Prado’s single & C. Headley’s 2-run homer (#4). Headley homered again in the 8th (#5) & the Birds held on for a 5-3 win. J. Altuve led off the bottom of the 1st with his 3rd homer.

G-3 Birds took a 4-1 lead after 3 using SFs from Cruz & Gennett. The Eliminators tied the game at 4-4 with a 2-run homer from V. Martinez. They then got a solo from Freeman & a 2-run double from Uribe to get a 7-4 win.

V.Martinez went 6-11 with 2 homers & 4 RBIs.
