Speakers at Shooting Stars II

Game 1 – The Stars spot the Speakers 6 runs before scoring on Chris Archer’s 2-out throwing error in the 6th. The Speakers pin 14 hits on Dallas Keuchel through 8 innings. Both Anthonys homer: Rendon (10) a 2nd inning 2-run shot and Rizzo’s (11) solo in the 5th. Final, 6-1.

W – Archer (5-8); L – Keuchel

Game 2 – The Max Patkin version of the Speakers return beginning in Game 2, but not immediately. Manny Machado drives a 2-run single in the 1st. After a Rizzo error cuts the lead in half in the 3rd, the Speakers actually answer with Carlos Gonzalez’s gift 2-run HR in the 4th.

Would it last? Certainly not. Chris Negron doubles home a pair with 2-outs in the bottom of the 7th. Yoervis Medina retires all 3 batters he faces and needs just 1 more out in the 8th when Andrelton Simmons boots a Matt Kemp grounder. The baseball gods continue to torture the Speakers as Jhonny Peralta (who can’t even spell) delivers a 2-run shot and a Stars come-from-behind 5-4 win.

W – AJ Ramos; L – Medina (2-2)

Game 3 – This is more vintage 2015 Speakers as they yawn through another 5-hitter (4 singles), only pausing to score on Rizzo’s (12) solo in the 4th, already down 3-0. Justin Morneau (4-4, 2-HR, 3-RBI, 3-R) joins a long list of Speaker killers this season. Todd Frazier adds the icing with a 2-run blast with 2-outs in the 7th for a 5-1 Stars win.

W – Jose Quintana; L – Bud Norris, in his final OOTL start (3-7)

Speakers at Eliminators

Game 1 – Buster Posey (9) takes David Price deep with Anthony Rizzo on base in the 1st, and then the Speakers bats take the next 9 innings off, accumulating 3 measly hits. Cruising with a 1-hitter, Felix Hernandez (as has been the pattern) surrenders 3 extra-base hits in the 5th, including Josh Harrison’s 2-run HR. Felix loses another 4-hitter, 3-2.

W – Price; L – Hernandez (8-10); S – Darren O’Day

Game 2 – 3 more extra-base hits in the 1st, this time featuring Victor Martinez’s 2-run HR is all Chris Sale needs. The Speakers string together 3 hits in the 2nd to score twice … and then take off the next 9 innings again. Jordan Zimmermann (+42) walks 2 in the 5th, one with the bases loaded. Jay Bruce and Jonathon Lucroy solos add to the misery in the Eliminators 6-2 win.

W – Sale (CG); L – Zimmermann (7-6)

Game 3 – Jon Lester takes pity on his former teammates, allowing 10 hits and 5 ER through 6 IP. Mookie Betts (3-5, D, HRs #5&6, 5-RBI, 3-R) shows promise for the Speakers 2016 outfield. Jesse Hahn allows just 2 RBI singles in the 4th following a pair of walks to earn his first win, 8-2 Speakers.

W – Hahn (1-4); L – Lester

Devil Dogs at Speakers

Game 1 – The Dogs tally 9 before the Speakers use their 6th hit to dent the scoreboard in the 8th. Adam LaRoche slugs a 2-run HR; Orlando Arcia gets 2 RBI singles; Yoenis Cespedes commits the Speakers’ 23rd OF error that leads to a pair of runs; and, Jordan Zimmermann walks 4 (+42) — the usual. 9-1 final.

W – Michael Wacha; L – Zimmermann (7-5)

Game 2 – Alex Wood walks the first 3 batters in the 2nd, allowing the Devil Dogs to score without a hit. The Speakers finally score again (after getting blanked for another 9 innings) in the 7th for a 1-1 tie that lasts about 2 seconds. Josh Hamilton singles to lead off the Dogs 8th and scores on David Wright’s 2-out RBI double. The Dogs add insurance in the 9th on Sal Perez’s 2-out RBI single following Wood’s fielding miscue. 3-1 Dogs.

W – Stephen Strasburg; L – Wood (4-5); S – Tony Watson

Game 3 – The Speakers score as many runs in the 1st inning as they have all series: 2 runs … and then get 3 singles (all in different innings) the rest of the way. Meanwhile, LaRoche and Chris Carter each smoke 2-run HRs in the 4th for a 4-2 win and Dogs’ sweep.

W – James Shields; L – Bud Norris (3-6)

The Speakers roll zero offensive 66s, zero 11s, 1-22 (Andrelton Simmons 7) and 3-33s (2 Stephen Vogt doubles and a Cespedes 2nd column single) in the series. With those paltry rolls, a team of Babe Ruth cards would score 4 runs on 17 hits in a 3-game set.

Arrogant Bastards at Speakers

Game 1 – Because the Speakers are simply destined to be miserable, the ABs put up crooked numbers in 5 consecutive innings (2nd-6th) for a 21-4 laugher. Manager Williams states, “We’re fortunate to collect 21 runs in half a 30-game period.” The ABs load the bases in the 2nd: Mike Trout strokes a 3-run triple. Same situation in the 3rd: Evan Longoria knocks a salami. Same situation in the 4th: Marcel Ozuna clears ’em with a triple. That marks 4 consecutive bases loaded situations (back to last series) where the Speakers were victims of 3 3-run triples and a grand slam.

W – Max Scherzer; L – Chris Archer (4-8, 4.17)

Game 2 – The Speakers rally for 3 in the 9th to … lose 4-3. They’ve now scored 5 runs in the 9th innings of this series, only to be out-scored overall, 25-7. “You can’t make this stuff up, Harry.” Alex Wood makes 2 mistakes: a 1st inning 2-run shot by Giancarlo Stanton and a David Ortiz 2-run blast in the 6th. Oh, and Rajai Davis was cut down at the plate in the 3rd.

W – Cole Hamels; L – Wood (4-4, 3.91)

Game 3 – Stephen Vogt’s 2-run single and Anthony Rendon’s 3-run HR (#9) support poor Felix Hernandez for a change. Speakers salvage a 7-0 5-hitter by backing the King’s first CG shutout of the season with a 13-hit attack.

W – Hernandez (8-9, 3.08); L – Shelby Miller

The Speakers have now pitched 3 shutouts while the offense has been blanked a dozen times through 82 games.

The Plague at Speakers

Game 1 – The Plague have a knack for scoring late to overtake the Speakers, and this series continues that trend. Yoenis Cespedes’ 2-out RBI single in the 2nd scores Anthony Rendon for a quick Speakers lead. The Plague match in the 4th on a pair of doubles (Paul Goldschmidt and Lorenzo Cain) around three strikeouts.

Goldschmidt (3-4, 2-D, RBI, R) doubles home Billy Hamilton with the game-winner in the 7th to chase Alex Wood. The Plague tack on a Torii Hunter 2-out RBI single in the 9th, which they need after Cain muffs Howie Kendrick’s single into a 9th inning run in the bottom half for a 3-2 final.

W – Henderson Alvarez (who must be undefeated in his career against the Speakers); L – Wood (4-3, 3.86); S – Aaron Sanchez

Game 2 – The Speakers carry a 3-1 lead to the 8th when The Plague magic jams the bases with 1 out. DJ LeMahieu triples home all 3. A leadoff walk and 2 9s in The Plague 9th set up a Michael Brantley sac fly to win 5-4. Buster Posey (3-4, D, HR #8, 2-RBI, R) performs well in the Speakers’ usual losing effort.

W – Alfredo Simon; L – Felix Hernandez (7-9!, 3.27); S – Sanchez

Game 3 – Kendrick supplies two 2-run doubles with the bases juiced to lead the Speakers to an improbable 5-2 win behind Jordan Zimmermann’s CG 6-hitter. The Plague 7th-9th inning rallies generate 6 base runners, but no runs.

W – Zimmermann (7-4, 2.64); L – Scott Kazmir

The Plague finishes the season series 7-3 against the hapless Speakers.
