Shartlesville Browns vs. Shooting Stars II

Game 1) Browns finally get in the W column behind Kershaw who went 7 and allowed 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5. Game 1 marked one of the trends of the series: big 1st innings by the victors as the Sharts sent 8 to bat scoring 3 runs on 5 hits including homers by Bruce Hairpin and Kyle Seager. Another trend emerged for the Browns in the 5th as they plated 2 runs with only one hit as Morales walked ahead of a Castellanos 2-run bomb. The Browns cruised to an 8-3 victory.
Game 2) Game 2 pitted deGrom against Gallardo and turned on another 2-run/1-hit inning for the Sharts as deGrom walked Seager leading off the 2nd and surrendered a 2 run shot to Salvy Perez. It stayed locked at 2-0 until the 8th when the Stars got a 2-out rally going. Inciarte singled, took 2nd on an error and was plated by a Carpenter base knock to cut the lead to 2-1. Tony Watson got the last out of the 8th and stayed on to pitch the 9th for his first save after the Browns plated an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th to improve to 2-4 with a 3-1 win.
Game 3) The big first inning was back as the Stars knocked Wacha around. Inciarte doubled to lead things off followed by an Escobar walk to set the stage for Carpenter who reached the seats for a 3-run HR. The Stars weren’t done as Casali singled and reached second on a Billy Burns throwing error. He was plated by Choo to push the Stars advantage to 4-0 before the Sharts ever touched a bat. The Browns looked to chip away when Morales actually hit with RISP and doubled in Zobrist in the 2nd, but that was all they had against Kuechel. He waltzed through the Browns lineup allowing 1 run on 2 hits while walking 2 and K’ing 10 (including 6 in a row in the 6th and 7th) to get the W. Soria and Smith were perfect in the 8th and 9th to close it out. Carpenter also added a solo shot in the 3rd inning to help the Stars to a 5-1 win.
Game 4) This game featured both of the big themes of this series. In the top of the 1st the Browns got a leadoff triple from Dyson and an RBI ground out from Phillips followed by back-to-back doubles from Hairpin and Morales to stake Strasburg to a 3-0 lead before he took the mound and it would prove to be all he needed. Phillips and Seager solo jobs in the 5th and 6th made it 5-0 before Inciarte doubled to lead off the 6th and was driven in by Teixeira to cut the lead to 5-1. Then came the familiar scenario in the 8th as Hairpin walked and Seager smacked a two-run shot for another 2-run/1-hit inning, the third for the Sharts in the series. Seager ended up 4/2/4/3 with 2 HRs and a 2b. Strasburg gave up an unearned run in the 9th but held on for the CG win as the Browns improved to 3-5 behind the 7-2 victory.
Notes: The Browns hit .246 for the series and had their slugging shoes on to the tune of 5 doubles, a triple and 8 homers.

Shooting Stars II vs. Lymebees

Game 1; Arrieta vs Fiers; Bees manage a first inning run with two outs and runners on first and second when Cano hits a single. Bees get a leadoff single by Hosmer in the third followed by a 2-run HR by Lind. Stars would get their only run in the third with two out. Escobar singles and Carpenter hits a double with Escobar running to score. Arrieta would pitch into the 8th and with two outs Bees bring in Givens to finish the game. Stars would get a two-out double in ninth but Givens would strike out final two batters of game as Bees win 3-1.
Game 2; Bumgarner vs deGrom; Bees score two runs in the first with one coming in on a WP; another in the 3rd, 3 more in the 5th and a solo HR by Tulowitzki in the 8th. Bumgarner would pitch a complete game shutout giving up just 2 hits as Bees win 7-0.
Game 3; Keuchel vs Gray; Bees would score in the second inning on a leadoff single by Braun and SB. With one out Beltre would single him in. Stars come back in the 5th with Peralta hitting a one-out single. Escobar, up with two outs, would get HBP followed by a Carpenter 2-run triple for Stars 2 runs. Keuchel would get pulled in the bottom of the 5th. After the first two batters get out, Norris singles and Yelich walks. Lowe would come in to get the third out and the Stars pen shuts down the Bees. Stars win 2-1.
Game 4: Lackey vs Hendricks; Bees would win this with a one-out solo HR by Yelich in the 7th inning being the only scoring. Lackey would get pulled in the bottom of the 5th after giving up a leadoff single. The Stars bullpen does a good job except for a solo HR. Hendricks would get pulled after going 5 inning and giving up 5 hits, most notably in the 3rd inning Peralta would lead off with a single and Inciarte follows with a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd base. But Alonso hits into a line drive double play and Hendricks would get out of the inning. Lymebees shut down the Stars in the final 4 innings and Bees win 1-0.
Bees pitching is the story of the series as starters give up 3 runs and relievers don’t give anything.

Bees get the go-ahead run in the 9th on a Yelich single and stolen base and Avila RBI single. Stars would load the bases with one out, but do not score as Bees win 3-2 and go up in the series to 3-1.

Game 5; Fister vs Arrieta; Bees would strike first with a solo HR by Adams in the 4the. Bees add 2 more runs in the 5th. Stars get a 2-run HR by Negron in the 6th and Frazier hits a solo HR in the 6th to tie the game. With the score tied at 3 in the bottom of the 12th, Cano would lead off with a single. Tulowitzki flies out. Reddick hits into a fielder’s choice and is on first as the Bees hit-and-run with Beltre, who doubles in the game and series winner. Bees win 4-3 and take the series 4-1 in 5 games.

Shooting Stars II vs. Arrogant Bastards

Game 1  DeGrom vs. Hamels

First four innings have hits scattered and only threat from the Stars in the first, but no ones scored. Santana with a triple, but stranded there in the third.

Top of five, Kemp lead-off homer turned back into a double. McKenry says, “OH NO YOU DON’T” and smacks a two-run shot that holds up. 2-0 Stars until the bottom of the inning in which the Bastards get two runs on a Turner double scoring Longoria and Santana to tie it up.

Morneau sacrifice fly in the 7th scores Pence for a Stars one-run lead. Bottom of the 9th, two outs: solo shot by Longoria puts us into extra innings.

Top of ten, Morneau hits a HR, TURNED back into a double.  Carpenter sacs him to third. Pedroia tries a sac attempt but a fielder’s choice results. Runner out at home for the second out. CUDDYER says that doesn’t work. Signal is given for the hit-and-run with Pedroia on first. He smacks a double scoring Pedroia and the Stars shut down the Bastards 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Stars win 4-3.

Game 2 Fiers vs. Roark

Stars bats are cold in this one with the only scoring threat in the first with two on and one out. No run production at all. Roark and bullpen scatter 6 hits and 8 Ks for the win.

Ortiz scores two runs, hits a double and a homer.  Bastards only other run was scored in the 7th by McDonald pinch-running for Panik.

Bastards Win 3-0.

Game 3 – GAME OF THE SERIES

Stars come home for the next two games. Fister and the entire bullpen are used in this 16-inning classic. The Bastards use 6 pitchers as well.

Stars get a run in the first inning with Crisp scoring on Cervelli’s fielder’s choice. Pedroia rips a HR in the 5th to make it 2-0 Stars.

Bastards get a run in the 8th to cut the lead to 1. Then with 2 outs in the 9th, Suzuki gets a single to tie the game.

Top of 11th with TWO outs AGAIN, Bastards get an unearned run to take the lead. However, the Stars tie it in the bottom of the inning with two singles by Pagan and Morneau.

Bottom of 12, PENCE hits game winning HR. WAIT, TURNED BACK. He does not score on lead-off double.

13th, 14th, 15th were non-eventful. In the 16th, the Bastards get two runs  on doubles by Suzuki and Turner and a single by Santana. Stars get a double play to end the long game.

Bastards WIN the classic in 16 innings, 4-3.

Game 4 – Stars home again – Hammel vs. Lynn

Stanton blasts a HR for the Bastards in the 2nd, but they only muster 3 hits the rest of the game. Stars get a two-run shot by Morneau and Pagan knocks home a third run scored by Kemp in the 4th.

Lynn goes 8 innings. Chapman comes in to the 9th and SLAMS the door.

Stars win 3-1.   Series all tied up going to game 5.

Game 5 – REMATCH of STARS ON THE ROAD – DeGrom vs. Hamels

Stars waste no time in this game. Cuddyer rips a solo shot in the first, followed by a double by Peralta and a TWO RUN SHOT by the “TODD FATHER”.

McKenry leads off the second with a double and later scores on a sac by Holt. Stars get three singles the next three innings and bats go ice cold.

Stanton rips a HR in the 4th to cut the lead to 4-1. 6th inning, Turner leads off with a double. Two walks later, bases loaded. Putnam records the final out by Martin and the threat ends.

Bastards get a one-out HR in the 8th. Wait, turned back, but he scores on a Stanton double. Ortiz K’s to end the 8th.

Hughes comes in to the 9th and closes it out 1-2-3 to retire the Champs’ season and record the first Wild Card Series Win for the Shooting Stars.

Stars win 4-2.

This series is the best series I have played for a long time and ranks up there with the WORLD SERIES against the Asian Tsunamis.

Both teams score 14 runs. Stars hit 8 HRs with 3 turned back; one, a game winner in Game 3. Bastards hit 5 HRs with one turned back.

Fun fact: 3 of 4 HRs turned back scored anyway. The one that did not was a game winner.

Bastards had 19 additional extra-base hits not including the HRs; Stars had just 10.
Stars K’d 45 times; Bastards 47.

Birds of Pray at Shooting Stars II

G-1 Stars scored 4 1st inning runs on 4 hits, capped by a Kemp 3-run homer. This constituted more runs than the Birds would score in the series. DeGrom went 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run in the Stars 4-1 win.

G-2 Fiers needed only 93 pitches to blank the Birds 2-0 on 1 hit. Stars got 2 3rd inning runs on a Morneau double for a 2-0 Stars win.

G-3 Stars got an RBI from Pagan (1st inn) and Frazier (3rd inn) while Kuechel and the bullpen scattered 2 hits in the Stars 2-1 win. Birds only run came from a 2nd inning Aybar single.

Birds scored 2 runs on 8 hits in the 3 game sweep.
